Resources for Gaming

Problem gaming has been identified as a disorder for future study in the fifth edition of The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Those that experience problem gaming might be preoccupied with gaming, lose interest in other activities, and experience withdrawal symptoms when they try to reduce their playing.

Problem gaming is further complicated by the increasing inclusion of gambling within games. The monetization of games through microtransactions such as loot boxes can increase the risk for both gambling and gaming problems. The purchase of loot boxes when the contents are unknown and random is similar to if not identical to gambling. Those with a gambling problem have been shown to spend more on loot boxes than those with no problem or a low or moderate risk.

Problem gaming is sometimes thought of as mainly a problem for male youth, but the average age of gamers is in their mid-30s, and male players are only slightly more common than female players. If you or a loved one is experiencing a gaming problem, there is help. Use the resources below to learn more about gaming addiction and to take the first steps toward recovery.
