TRIBAL VOICES

Tribal Voices is a grassroots and cooperative effort to enhance responsible gambling programs throughout the state of Oklahoma. This working group is made of tribal representatives and is organized and led by the Oklahoma Association on Problem Gambling & Gaming (OAPGG) and Oklahoma Indian Gaming Association (OIGA).

The goal of Tribal Voices is to develop statewide efforts to cultivate a culture of responsible gambling programs and to help those that develop a gambling problem.

To date this group has developed and revised the following responsible gambling programs:

TRAINING FILMS

  • Developed and filmed a new edition of “New Employee Orientation Training Film on Responsible Gambling.” (Released and distributed in 2019.)
  • Wrote scripts for and helped edit and create an “Annual Refresher Course on Responsible Gambling.” This is an animated version of a training film with avatar characters to show how casino employees seek to help customers with various problem gambling issues.
  • Created a new training course, “Responsible Gambling and Problem Gambling Awareness,” built on past training films. (Released and distributed in 2022.)

INTERVENTION APPROACH

  • Developed a three-aspect approach to helping problem gamblers in the casino setting:
    • Recognition
    • Connection
    • Call to action

PUBLIC AWARENESS

  • Developed a new branding image and the slogan Smart Play OK which will be featured on all brochures, posters, billboards, promotions, and advertising.

RESPONSIBLE GAMBLING POLICY

  • Future work will involve meetings to develop a standard for responsible gambling policies. This project will be done in the hope that all Oklahoma tribes and casinos will have the highest quality of standards of care for responsible gambling with the mission of helping problem gamblers.
